On February 22 at 3:30 PM, Cat Webling will host the first District 6 writing workshop at the Russell Public Library in Russell, KS.
This will function as the trial run of other potential workshops to happen across District 6 in coordination with the public library system, and will cover persuasive writing for grades 6-12. Cat aims to report her findings from this workshop at the March meeting. Starting February 1, 2023, the District 6 blog will be accepting submissions for blog posts from members of District 6. Submissions are unlimited per person but should follow these guidelines:
You can submit to the D6 blog by emailing [email protected] with your name, blog post idea, and when you will be available to write the piece. If you have a prewritten piece, copy it in the body of your email; do not submit it as an attachment. The posting schedule for the blog will be determined by the number of submissions. District 6’s Ginger Zyskowski is proud to announce that her poem, “The tree stands silent,” will appear in the “Out on a Limb” project at the Evergreen Arboretum in Everett, WA in April of 2023. This project, co-sponsored by the Everett Public Library, takes two dozen poetic works from authors of all ages and inscribes them on clay tablets that will hang from the branches of the trees in the arboretum to “create and maintain an inspirational” setting, according to the management of the facility. The exhibit will run for the month of April in 2023, which coincides with National Poetry Month. There will be a grand opening event on April 1, 2023, and additional events throughout the month that have yet to be announced. This Saturday, January 21st, at 1:30 pm will be the first monthly meeting for the statewide Kansas Authors Club hosted by the state board. Per the state board:
You are invited to our January 21 program, featuring Paul Epp, presenting on marketing tips and ideas for independent authors. Here are some things to know about this first program being offered for members of Kansas Authors Club across the state.
Questions? Please feel free to join the zoom meeting early. At 1:15 pm we will provide some basic “how to” instructions for using Zoom meeting tools and for the breakout rooms. After the presentation, we will open breakout rooms for districts who plan to continue with monthly meetings at this time. Club members will have received an email with the link to the Zoom meeting on January 8th. If you cannot find the link, please feel free to message Cat Webling for assistance via email or the Contact page. In a blog post, former D6 president Jim Potter announced that he is six months out from the publication of his first children's story, The ABCs of Law Enforcement as Told by K-9 Kudzu.
According to Jim, he was inspired to write the book during his years working in the public school system. It was originally titled B is for Badge until, after a recent battle with writer's block, Alex Potter, Jim's wife and fellow D6 member, suggested creating a German Shepherd police dog narrator. "Her idea cuased a seismic shift in my thinking," comments Jim. You can find more of Jim's work on his website, www.jimpotterauthor.com, and you can read his blog post through the link below. D6 members Jared Vaughn and Karis Ens will be appearing alongside nine other authors at a Meet the Authors event in Wichita on Saturday, January 14th. The event will be held at 2400 S. Greenwich on the South side of the building and will last from 1 pm to 6 pm.
There will be prize drawings every 30 minutes at the event and snacks available as authors read from their work and answer questions from the audience. For more information about the event, you can contact Karis Ens at 316 285 3572 or [email protected]. District 6 is proud to support Ginger Zyskowski in her announcement that her new poem, "White," is available to read now in Southern Arizona Press's anthology, The Wonders of Winter.
Southern Arizona Press is a veteran-owned business which aims to celebrate poets across the industry by uplifting their works to a wider audience without the barrier of pay-to-play publishing. This anthology is one of a series done to promote interesting, new, and exciting works, and features, "a collection of 120 poetic works celebrating the Wonders of Winter from 50 poets from across the globe." You can find Ginger's poem and many other fantastic works at the link below.
